PLEASE ... No Dogs on the Course or Event Grounds

To assure the safety of all participants and spectators, pets and strollers are not allowed on the course. Pets are also not allowed on the event grounds, which include the finish line, tent, and food and spectator areas. Signs will be posted as a reminder. If you must bring a pet, please confine it to the parking area.

Bus to the Start Line

All Marathon Runners must park at Telemark Resort (finish area) and ride a bus to the start of the run. Parking is very limited at the start area at Hatchery Park and will not be permitted. Buses for the Marathon Start will leave Telemark promptly at 7:00 AM.

There will be NO bus transport back to the start area after you finish your event.

Start Time: 8:00 am - Hatchery Park, Hayward

The Birkie Marathon is a very challenging trail run held on the beautiful American Birkebeiner Trail, the Trail used in the Winter for the American Birkebeiner Cross-Country Ski Marathon. The final leg of the course is run on the Kortelopet Trail. These trails are mowed, relatively smooth, but hilly, and fall is a beautiful time to enjoy them!

THERE IS NO RACE-DAY REGISTRATION
FOR THE BIRKIE TRAIL RUN EVENTS!

  • Register online through Wednesday, September 18th.
  • Register at the Birkie Office in Hayward (across from Marketplace parking lot) on Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Telemark Lodge from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Bag & Bib pick-up is Friday at the Birkie Office  9 am to 4 pm, Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 pm at Telemark Lodge and Saturday at Telemark Lodge, starting at 6 a.m.

  

Individual Marathon Run Course Description

  • Mile markers will be placed on the trail every mile indicating the number of miles remaining to the finish line. Signs will also be placed on the trail marking 1/2 mile and 1/4 mile to the finish line.
  • Marathon runners may encounter Marathon Relay, Half Marathon and 5K runners, and Birkie Trek Nordic walkers on the trail, especially near the end of the race.
  • Aid Stations are located at: Mosquito Brook, Gravel Pit, 16.5K, "OO", Boedecker, Fire Tower, Timber Trail, and 4K from the Finish Line on the Korte Course
  • There is a cut-off time of 11:00 AM by which marathon runners must reach the "OO" aid station at 13.1 miles. Runners not making the cut-off by 11:00 will be transported to the finish line.

Start to Mosquito Brook

Section One:

The Marathon Starts at Hatchery Park, off Highway 77, outside of Hayward.

Start Time - 8:00 a.m.

Distance - 3.6 miles/5.8K

Moderate to Difficult - Several short and one longer climb to the top of "B Hill", then rolling to flat.

Mosquito Brook to Gravel Pit Road

Section Two:

Distance - 3.9 miles/6.3K

Easy to Moderate - Generally a moderately rolling run with one short, but steep uphill.

Gravel Pit Rd. to Cty. Hwy. OO

Section Three:

Distance - 5.6 miles/9K

Moderate difficulty - Many rollers with a short but steep uphill near the end. This is the second longest leg of the course.

There is a cut-off time of 11:00 AM by which marathon runners must reach the "OO" aid station at 13.1 miles. Runners not making the cut-off by 11:00 will be transported to the finish line.

OO to Boedecker Road

Section Four:

Distance - 2.7 miles/4.3K

Easiest - The short length and moderate hills and flats make this the easiet section of the course.

Boedecker Road to Timber Trail Road.

Section Five:

Distance - 5.9 miles/9.5K

Most Difficult - The longest leg with a major climb to the highest point on the course near the top of Fire Tower Hill. This section will be tough!

Timber Trail Rd. to the Finish

Section Six:

Distance - 4.5 miles/7.3K

Moderate to Easy - Flat and rolling hills allowing some recovery prior to the final push to the finish line!

Awards

Overall male/female winners and the top two runners in each age/gender class will receive awards.

Age Classes for the Individual Marathon are:
16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and Over

Course Notes: North End

The last leg of the marathon / half-marathon course (which includes the Birke Trek – Nordic Walk) transitions from the Birkie Trail to the Birkie Classic Trail about one kilometer before the Timber Trail aid station. There the course joins the Kortelopet Trail, and follows the Kortelopet Trail to near Telemark Lodge, following a short connector trail to the Lodge and finish.
